The design's uniqueness lies in its ability to blend the building's structure with its natural surroundings. Rather than presenting as a stark, concrete mass, the building exudes a humanistic and natural green aura. This is achieved through the use of fiber cement board cladding, which creates the illusion of a massive stone structure, reminiscent of ancient cave dwellings.
Further enhancing the natural aesthetic, the building's exterior is painted with ceramic paint, mimicking the rough surface of rocks. This not only adds to the visual appeal but also provides weather resistance and anti-fouling properties. The large-scale, pure white structure serves as a canvas for nature, with sunlight creating delicate patterns of light and shadow.
Attention to detail is evident in the design's interaction with its environment. Drawing on the land features and weather conditions of Uluru, the building presents different scenes depending on the season, weather, and time of day. Hexagonal holes, inlaid with metal frames, create a dynamic landscape as sunlight shines through and clouds pass by.
The project, which spanned from March to July 2019 in Taichung, presented its own set of challenges. The façade's rhombus lattice, created using a digital die cutting segmentation approach, required repeated testing to control deviation and reserve space for each metal hanger. Despite these challenges, the end result is a dynamic, visually striking landscape.
Wu's Nature Canvas design is not just a testament to innovative architecture but also a celebration of nature. The design was awarded Silver in the A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021, a testament to its creative and professional excellence. As Wu's design demonstrates, architecture and nature can coexist harmoniously, creating spaces that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and emotionally comforting.
